This Pennisetum produces very little viable seed that will germinate on site or in our nursery. We have to grow it from division, and not seed. It will stay where it is planted, which makes this native grass, highly desirable.
Environment: An environmentally friendly Australian native. Excellent for attracting native birds. With a low viability of seed, this form is a non-invasive to native bushland.
Description: A showy, compact clumping perennial grass with narrow arching leaves and spectacular feathery flower plumes from Summer to Autumn. Grows to 3/5 of the size of the common form, being more hardy and having a better winter colour.
Uses: Mass planting, accent plant for rockeries and borders. Low maintenance gardens. Plumes suitable for dried arrangements.
Position: Tolerates a wide range of soils and climatic conditions, including poorly drained soils. Frost and drought tolerant.
Care: Mulch well. Trim to 1/3 the size preferably in April/May or when required. Fertilise with slow release fertiliser in late winter.
Nafray has fine leaves, is drought tolerant and a great winter colour. It is well suited to roadside, subdivision and mass planting as it has a lower growing height.
Nafray has a beautiful seed head that sits just nicely above the plant. It grows well from Hobart to Darwin. Successful plantings have been carried out in Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne.
